Morocco, Togo, and Zimbabwe are the only three African countries participating at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.
Morocco has 2 alpine skiers, Togo is making its debut with 1 cross-country skier and 1 alpine skier and Zimbabwe is represented by 1 alpine skier.
Africa is always poorly represented at the Winter Olympics because typical climate of most African nations is not conducive to participation in winter sports. The famous Olympic phrase uttered by Baron Pierre de Coubertin, the founding father of the modern Games reads: "It is not the winning, but the taking part that counts."
In the entire history of the Winter Olympics, the continent of Africa has never won a single medal, but for this handful of athletes who had to endure a multitude of hardships to reach Sochi, participation is a genuine victory in itself.
